Product of Chrysler engineering and craftsmanship, Plymouth has been so named because its endurance and strength, ruggedness and freedom from limitations so accurately typify that Pilgrim band who were the first American Colonists.
Amazing huh?

That was the 'official' tag line the company used for Plymouth. Really though, the name originated from something called "Plymouth Binder Twine" which was used by basically every farmer in the country. Chryslers gave the name to the car to grab a piece of the farmers market share which was dominated by Ford at the time.
Sadly the Plymouth line ended in 2001. Its sad to think there will never be a new Plymouth Barracuda, Plymouth Road Runner or Plymouth Fury (1958 model seen in the movie Christine). There's a lot of history in the Plymouth name.
